Many people are slightly embarrassed or anxious when they first meet a trustee, and it’s easy to forget what questions you want to ask. Before you meet with a trustee it’s important to make a list of questions that you would like answered in your free initial consultation. That way you can be sure that all of your questions are answered. At the same time you are writing out any questions, jot down a rough list of your debts, income, and assets as that list will also come in handy at your consultation.

When meeting with a trustee, it’s important that they provide you with clear answers that you understand. If you don’t understand the answers, or how they apply to your situation, ask to have them re-explained.

Here are some important questions you should ask when meeting with a trustee for the first time. Please feel free to use and adjust this list, as well as add any other questions you may have before your consultation. It’s important that all of your questions are answered so that you can make a well thought out and education decision regarding your financial situation.

What are my duties as a first-time bankrupt?
Do I still have to pay my outstanding taxes after bankruptcy?
What assets can I keep and what assets will I lose during bankruptcy?
Do I still have to pay my student loan after bankruptcy?
Can I still use my credit card if I’m thinking about declaring bankruptcy?
Will I be able to get a credit card, car loan, or a mortgage again if I declare bankruptcy?
